Chapter 3: The Reading
Harold Weiss’s office smelled like old coffee and older money — mahogany shelves, a leather chair that had probably cost more than Elena’s car, a window overlooking a parking garage instead of a view, because even wealth apparently ran out of things to spend on eventually.
He’d asked her to come at eight. The family reading was scheduled for ten.
“Ms. Marsh.” He stood when she entered, which surprised her. Nobody stood for her anymore. “Thank you for coming alone.”
“You made it sound like I didn’t have a choice.”
“You didn’t, not really.” He gestured to the chair across from his desk. “Please. Before the Calloways arrive, there are things you should hear from me, in private, so you’re not blindsided in front of people who already resent you.”
“Resent me?” Elena sat, carefully. “I haven’t done anything to them.”
“No,” Harold agreed. “But you’re about to become the most important person in that room, and they don’t know it yet. That tends to create resentment all on its own.”
Elena’s stomach dropped somewhere around her shoes. “Mr. Weiss, I was Margaret’s nurse. That’s all. Whatever this is, I think—”
“Margaret Calloway revised her will four months ago.” He slid a folder across the desk, unopened. “She named you as a primary beneficiary of the Calloway Family Trust. Not a gift. Not a gesture of gratitude for your care. A controlling interest.”
The room went very quiet.
“That’s not possible,” Elena said.
“It’s not only possible. It’s done. Notarized, witnessed, ironclad.” Harold folded his hands. “The only open question is why. And that, Ms. Marsh, is something even I don’t fully know. Margaret was specific about the legal language and remarkably tight-lipped about her reasons.”
“There has to be a mistake. I met her in March. I’ve known her seven months.”
“She amended the will four months ago,” Harold repeated, gently, like he was breaking bad news to a patient instead of delivering one. “Four months after she met you, yes. But long before that, Ms. Marsh, she’d already been asking me questions. About your background. Your mother’s name. Whether certain hospital records from thirty years ago could still be located.”
Elena’s hands had gone cold. “Why would she care about my mother’s medical records from thirty years ago?”
Harold looked at her for a long moment — the same searching look Margaret used to give her, Elena realized with a jolt. Maybe it ran in whatever family had trained him.
“That,” he said, “is a conversation Margaret clearly intended to have with you herself. She didn’t finish it before she died. I don’t know how much of it I’m even legally permitted to finish for her. But I can tell you this much: nothing about this will was a mistake, an accident, or a whim. Margaret Calloway did not do things by accident. Ever.”
The door opened before Elena could answer. Daniel walked in first, Vanessa behind him, both dressed for battle in tailored black, both stopping cold at the sight of Elena already seated across from the lawyer.
“What is she doing here?” Vanessa said.
Harold Weiss closed the folder in front of him and folded his hands on top of it.
“Please, sit,” he said. “All of you. There’s quite a lot to go over, and I think it’s best you hear it together.”
Daniel’s eyes moved from Harold, to the closed folder, to Elena’s face — and something in his expression shifted, fast, from confusion into a kind of dawning, furious understanding.
“No,” he said quietly. “Absolutely not.”
“Mr. Calloway—”
“Whatever’s in that folder,” Daniel said, “she is not walking out of this office owning any part of what my family built.”
Elena opened her mouth to say she didn’t want to own anything, that this was a mistake, that she’d give it back right now if it meant not being looked at the way Daniel was looking at her in this exact moment — like she was a thief who’d finally been caught.
But before she could get a single word out, Harold Weiss opened the folder, and began to read.
