The Inheritance She Wasn’t Supposed to Find – Chapter 9

← THE INHERITANCE SHE WASN’T SUPPOSED TO FIND

Chapter 9 of 10

Before She Gets to Say It First

“It’s true,” Elena said, before Daniel could ask again. “I found out an hour ago. Margaret was my grandmother. My mother had an affair with someone in your family thirty years ago. I don’t know who yet. I was going to tell you myself, tonight, in person. I swear to you, Daniel, I wasn’t hiding this from you.”

The silence on the line lasted long enough that Elena thought he might have hung up.

“Come to the house,” he said finally, voice tight but not unkind. “Now. Before Vanessa gets a head start on how this story gets told.”

The drive took nineteen minutes. Elena spent every one of them rehearsing sentences she abandoned before she finished them, because none of the words sounded like the truth when she said them out loud. I didn’t know. I promise I didn’t know. It sounded exactly like something a liar would say, and she hated how much that thought scared her.

Daniel was waiting at the door when she arrived, already in motion before she’d fully parked, ushering her inside like the house itself might be listening.

“Vanessa’s in the study,” he said quietly. “She’s on the phone with someone from the Herald. I heard her say hidden granddaughter and decades-long cover-up in the same sentence. Whatever she’s building, she’s building it fast.”

“Can you stop her?”

“I can try. I can’t promise it’ll work.” He ran a hand through his hair, and for the first time since Elena had met him, he looked less like the confident heir to a real estate empire and more like a man who had lost his grandmother and was still, somewhere underneath the suits and the lawsuits, grieving her. “Elena. I need to ask you something, and I need the truth, not the version that sounds better.”

“Okay.”

“Did you know, before tonight, that there was any chance you were related to this family?”

“No,” Elena said, and it came out steadier than she expected, because for once she wasn’t hiding anything. “I found out my mother worked here two weeks ago, from your grandmother’s letter. I found out I was her granddaughter forty minutes before you called.”

Daniel studied her face the way his grandmother used to — searching, careful, like he was looking for the seam where a lie would show.

“I believe you,” he said finally.

Relief hit Elena so hard her knees nearly buckled. “Thank you.”

“Don’t thank me yet.” His jaw tightened. “Believing you and stopping my sister from turning this into a headline are two very different problems.”

They found Vanessa in the study, phone pressed to her ear, already mid-sentence when they walked in — something about exclusive access and the real story behind the will.

“Vanessa.” Daniel’s voice cut across the room like a blade. “Hang up the phone.”

Vanessa turned, saw Elena standing beside her brother, and something like triumph flickered across her face.

“I’ll call you back,” she said into the phone, and hung up without waiting for a response. “Well. Look who decided to show up together. How touching.”

“Whatever you’re planning to tell that reporter,” Daniel said, “you need to stop.”

“Why? Because it’s not true?” Vanessa’s smile was sharp enough to draw blood. “Or because it is, and you’d rather I not be the one who says it first?”

“Because it’s not your story to sell,” Elena said, finding her voice at last. “This is my mother’s life. My family. If it comes out, it comes out on our terms, not as a headline you fed to a reporter to win a lawsuit.”

“My family,” Vanessa corrected, stepping closer, “has spent generations building something real, and you—” she gestured at Elena like she was something unpleasant found on the bottom of a shoe, “—you get to walk in after seven months and inherit half of it because my grandmother apparently had a secret love child running around this whole time. Do you have any idea how that makes the rest of us look? Like fools. Like we never noticed our own grandmother had another whole family hidden in plain sight.”

“That’s not my fault,” Elena said.

“No,” Vanessa agreed. “But it is my problem. And I intend to control how the world finds out about it, since apparently nobody bothered to give me a say in any of the rest of this.”

She picked her phone back up.

“Vanessa,” Daniel said, low and dangerous. “Don’t.”

“Watch me,” Vanessa said, and pressed the phone back to her ear.
