Episode 3 — The Lie Between Them

The silence after Clara’s question felt unbearable.

Daniel looked trapped.

Not emotionally trapped.

Strategically trapped.

Like a man calculating which truth would destroy him the least.

And suddenly, for the first time that night, I stopped seeing him as the victim of a complicated situation.

I saw him as dangerous.

Clara stepped closer to him slowly.

“What aren’t you telling me?”

Her voice remained calm, but I could feel the tension underneath it now.

Daniel glanced toward the guests surrounding us.

Too many people.

Too many witnesses.

His company investors sat near the front tables.

Board members.

Business partners.

People who treated Daniel Hart like a future political dynasty instead of a businessman.

And suddenly I understood why he looked terrified.

This wasn’t only personal.

It was public.

I folded my arms tightly across my chest.

“Answer her.”

Daniel exhaled slowly.

Then finally said:
“This isn’t the place.”

Clara laughed softly.

But there was no humor in it.

“You keep saying that because you think it buys you time.”

Her French accent sharpened slightly when she was angry.

Daniel rubbed his jaw again.

That nervous habit.

I used to think it was endearing.

Now I hated it.

The ballroom buzzed quietly with whispers.

Phones had started appearing.

Someone was recording.

Daniel noticed immediately.

His expression darkened.

“Everyone put your phones away.”

Nobody moved.

Of course they didn’t.

People loved public destruction.

Especially rich people’s destruction.

I looked at Clara again.

“You didn’t know about me.”

It wasn’t a question anymore.

She hesitated for the first time.

Only a second.

But enough.

“No,” she admitted quietly.

Daniel immediately closed his eyes.

And suddenly something shifted inside me.

Because if Clara didn’t know about me…

then this wasn’t simply cheating.

This was manipulation.

Calculated manipulation.

I looked at him carefully.

“How long were you with both of us?”

“Sophia—”

“How long?”

His silence answered again.

Clara’s face hardened beside him.

“You told me your engagement ended months ago.”

Daniel turned toward her sharply.
“Clara—”

“You said she left.”

My heartbeat stopped.

I stared at him.

Then laughed once under my breath.

Not because it was funny.

Because I genuinely couldn’t process how deeply this man had lied.

“He told me you abandoned him,” Clara continued coldly. “That you cared more about his money than him.”

The humiliation hit me harder than anything else that night.

Not because of Clara.

Because part of me suddenly realized Daniel probably believed his own lies.

That was the terrifying part.

People like Daniel rewrote reality until they no longer knew truth from convenience.

“You told her I left you?” I whispered.

Daniel looked exhausted now.

Cornered.

“I was trying to protect everyone.”

Clara stared at him in disbelief.
“You call this protection?”

The ballroom doors suddenly opened behind us.

Every head turned instantly.

A tall older man entered surrounded by security.

Silver hair.

Dark suit.

Cold expression.

Richard Hart.

Daniel’s father.

And judging by the expression on his face…

he already knew something had gone horribly wrong.

The atmosphere inside the ballroom changed immediately.

Guests straightened.

Whispers stopped.

Fear replaced curiosity.

Richard Hart walked toward us slowly, his gaze moving first to Daniel…

then to Clara…

then finally to me.

His expression changed slightly when he saw me standing there.

Not surprise.

Disappointment.

Like I had complicated something important.

That realization chilled me instantly.

Richard stopped beside Daniel.

“What happened?”

Nobody answered.

Richard’s eyes moved toward Clara’s wedding dress.

Then toward me.

And suddenly his face became unreadable.

Interesting.

He wasn’t shocked either.

Daniel swallowed hard.
“Dad—”

“I asked what happened.”

Daniel looked genuinely nervous now.

Not the nervousness he showed with me.

Real fear.

Richard turned toward Clara calmly.

“Go upstairs.”

Clara didn’t move.

“I’m not leaving until someone explains what’s happening.”

Richard’s eyes hardened slightly.

“This conversation is no longer public.”

That sentence told me everything.

This family already operated through secrets.

Through control.

Through damage management.

And suddenly I realized something terrifying.

This wasn’t the first scandal the Hart family had buried.

Not even close.

Then Richard finally looked directly at me.

And said the one thing that shattered whatever remained of my reality.

“You were never supposed to marry him.”
